Privacy policy
PocketRoo is a chores, jobs and allowance app for families. This policy says, in plain language, what we store, why, where it lives, who else touches it, and how you stay in control. If anything here is unclear, email support@pocketroo.app and a person will answer.
1. The short version
- Parents create the account. Kids never do, and kids never type in personal details.
- We store what a family enters to run their chores and allowance: names, chores, jobs, notes and a money ledger. Nothing else.
- No ads, no third-party analytics or tracking, no selling or sharing data for marketing.
- Everything lives with our database provider, Supabase, in Amazon Web Services' US West (Oregon) region.
- Parents can see everything in the app, export it as a file, and delete the whole family at any time.
- PocketRoo tracks money but never holds or moves it.
2. What we store
| About | What | Entered by |
|---|---|---|
| Parent account | Email address and password (we store a one-way hash, never the password itself), the time you accepted the terms, and the family you belong to. | The parent, at sign-up |
| Family | Family name, time zone, currency, week start, an invite code for the other parent. | Parents |
| Each kid | First name or nickname, an optional birth year, an avatar colour and a buddy (the mascot theme). No surname, no photo, no email, no birthday. | Parents |
| Chores and jobs | Chore templates and their daily instances (done, missed, excused), extra jobs with a price and who claimed them. | Parents set them up; kids check them off |
| Behaviour notes and money | Notes a parent logs about a kid (good behaviour, a slip-up, a bonus or a deduction, with a reason), and the money ledger: allowance, penalties, bonuses, job payments, payouts and whether a payout has been paid. | Parents; some lines are created automatically by the allowance rules |
| Kid devices | A kid's iPad signs in with an anonymous device session (a random identifier) that a parent links to the kid with a code. We store that identifier, the name the parent gave the device and when it was linked. The kid enters nothing. | Created automatically; linked by a parent |
| Technical | Our providers keep standard server logs (the IP address, time and type of a request) for security and troubleshooting. We do not add tracking of our own. | Automatic |
The web app at app.pocketroo.app loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so Google receives your device's IP address when a page loads. The native iPad and iPhone apps use the device's built-in fonts and do not do this. The web app does not use any other third-party service.
Read-aloud uses the speech voices built into the device. The text being read is never sent to us or anyone else.
3. What we do not do
- No advertising of any kind, and no behavioural or targeted advertising to anyone, ever.
- No third-party analytics, tracking or advertising SDKs in any of the apps.
- No selling, renting or sharing of personal information for marketing.
- No location, contacts, photos, microphone or camera. The apps do not ask for these permissions.
- No marketing emails to anyone, and no email to children at all.
4. How we use it
- To run the service: show each family its own chores, jobs and money, and nothing else. Access rules are enforced inside the database, so one family can never see another.
- To send account emails to parents: confirming an email address, resetting a password, confirming an email change. These come from PocketRoo <hello@pocketroo.app>.
- To answer support requests you send us.
- To keep the service secure and to find and fix problems.
5. Children's privacy (COPPA)
PocketRoo is used by children, and we designed it so that the parent stays in charge of every piece of information about their child.
- Parents create accounts and give consent. Only a parent can create a PocketRoo account, add a child, and link a child's device. By adding a child, the parent consents to us storing the information described above for that child.
- A child's data is limited to what the parent enters: a first name or nickname, an optional birth year, an avatar colour and a buddy, plus the chores, jobs, notes and money lines that the family records. We do not collect anything from the child directly, and a child's device never asks for a name, email, phone number, address, photo or location.
- A child's iPad is anonymous until a parent links it with a code, and it can only read that child's own chores and money and write a chore check or a job claim.
- No behavioural advertising and no tracking of children, and no third-party kits in the kids' app.
- We ask for no more than the service needs. A child can use PocketRoo without any of the optional fields being filled in.
- Parents can review, export and delete everything about their child at any time, in the app or by emailing us. Deleting a child or the whole family removes their data; unlinking an iPad removes that device's session.
- If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child without a parent's consent, we will delete it. Tell us at support@pocketroo.app.
6. Where it is stored and who processes it
We use a small number of providers to run PocketRoo. Each only receives what it needs for its job.
| Provider | What they do | What they see |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Hosts our database and sign-in service, on Amazon Web Services in the US West (Oregon) region. | Everything listed in section 2. |
| Resend | Delivers our account emails. | Parent email addresses and the content of those emails. |
| Cloudflare | Serves this website and the web app. | Standard web request logs. |
| Apple | App Store distribution and subscription billing. | Your Apple ID and payment details stay with Apple; we only learn whether a subscription is active. |
| Google Fonts | Fonts for the web app only. | Your IP address when the web app loads. |
Your data is stored and processed in the United States. If you use PocketRoo from elsewhere, you agree to that transfer.
7. How long we keep it
- For as long as your family's account exists.
- When you delete your account, your family's data is removed from the live database straight away. Copies in our database backups expire within 30 days.
- Emails we have sent are kept by our email provider for a short time for delivery troubleshooting, then removed.
- If you only remove a child or unlink a device, that child's or device's records are removed the same way.
8. Your choices and rights
- Review: everything we hold about your family is visible in the parents' app.
- Export: Settings > Export data gives you a file with the whole family: kids, chores, jobs, notes and the money ledger.
- Correct: edit names, chores, jobs and settings in the app. Money lines are never edited after the fact; a parent adds a reversal with a reason instead, so the history stays honest.
- Delete: Settings > Delete account deletes your parent account. If you are the last parent in the family it deletes the whole family, including the kids' device sessions. Kids can also unlink their own iPad.
- Change email: in Settings; both the old and the new address receive a confirmation.
Depending on where you live (for example the EU, the UK or California) you may have legal rights to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict some processing, and to complain to a supervisory authority. You can exercise all of these in the app or by emailing support@pocketroo.app. We will not treat you differently for doing so.
9. Security
Connections are encrypted in transit. Passwords are hashed. Every table in the database has row-level security, so a request can only ever reach its own family's rows, and kid devices can reach even less. Access to production is limited to the people who run PocketRoo. No system is perfectly secure, so if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission, change your password and tell us.
10. Subscriptions and payments
Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple through the PocketRoo Parents app (14-day free trial, then $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year per family). Apple handles your payment details; we never see them. PocketRoo tracks the allowance you agree with your child, but it is not a bank or a payment service and it never holds, moves or pays money. See the terms of use.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will email parents before the change takes effect and show a notice in the app. The effective date at the top always tells you which version you are reading.
